Do I need a mask for MIG welding?

MIG welding does not require the use of a mask if it is performed in an outside environment. Being outdoors in the fresh air with a gentle wind is the best way to maximize your ventilation.

On the other hand, if you are working indoors and the material you are dealing with produces fumes, then it is highly recommended that you either increase the ventilation in the room or wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose.

Do I need a mask for oxy-acetylene welding?

It is not required that you use a welding mask while working with oxyacetylene. In most cases, protective eyewear such as welding goggles is all that is required for this operation.

For electric arc welding (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and plasma cutting), a welding hood, not a mask, is worn to protect the skin on the face from the potentially damaging UV radiation that is released during the process. The sunburn caused by the UV rays will be worse than a day spent at the beach.
